- A Story Ballet
Are you a dance enthusiast? Do you enjoy live music? Are you a fan of the classic love story, but looking for a new take? Colors of Love is a story ballet composed in two acts, portraying a story of forbidden love between a man and a woman of differing cultural backgrounds. In light of recent political, cultural and economic unrest in our union, this ballet is an autobiographical commentary on these relevant issues, staged with a contemporary style and flare.
Featuring traditional pointe technique coupled with modern jazz choreography, Colors of Love is a show designed to engage audiences of all backgrounds, generations and ethnicities. Whether you are a seasoned veteran of neoclassical ballet or an intrigued and excited newcomer to the genre, admission is FREE and both events are open to the public! This collaborative project is completely student led, produced, and choreographed. More information about the executive team can be found below! World premieres will be hosted in the Bob Hope Theatre, a specialized venue for collaborative dance and theatre production, located in the Owens Arts Center of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX. Spencer A. Roberts - COMPOSER/producer
Born in Indianapolis, IN in January of 1996, Spencer A. Roberts is a young Texas-based composer, conductor and performer in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Spencer has earned undergraduate degrees in Music Education and Music Composition from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX, where he is currently pursuing master's degrees in Music Composition and Instrumental Conducting. A saxophonist and woodwind doubler, Spencer's music is heavily influenced not only by great orchestral composers, but also great jazz and R&B artists. Musicians such as Igor Stravinsky, Dmitri Shostakovich and Steve Reich often merge with the jazz and R&B influences of his upbringing, inspired by the likes of James Brown, Stevie Wonder, traditional and modern big band and combo jazz styles, and even the likes of more modern, popular urban styles such as those embraced by Snarky Puppy and Thundercat.
Spencer was selected as a winner of the 2021 SCI (Society of Composers Inc.) Composition Contest, where he received a workshop session and world premiere of a new work for Violin and Bb Clarinet titled "Tango For Two" in the fall of 2021, performed by the Kamraton ensemble. Spencer was also awarded the annual Irving Symphony Orchestra Student Composer in Residence, hosted by the Southern Methodist University Composition Department in collaboration with Hector Guzman, Music Director of the ISO. A workshop and world premiere of a new work titled "A Cowboy In Space" was given by the ISO in the fall of 2021; this piece was inspired by the popular televised Star Wars spinoff, The Mandalorian. Spencer was also named a winner of the 2021 UWSP (University of Wisconsin - Steven's Point) Clarinet Call For Scores. His latest unaccompanied work for solo Bb Clarinet, titled "Pinocchio", will receive a world premiere from Dr. Manasreh of UWSP in May of 2022.
In addition to his achievements as a composer, Spencer is highly active in the DFW music scene as a gigging professional. He is the saxophonist for Midnight Soul, a high energy party band specializing in weddings, corporate/private parties, and festivals, and has played shows across the metroplex and as far as Houston.

He also plays in the Toccare Winds, a professional wind ensemble in its second season based in Anna, TX, specializing in the classics of the wind band repertoire.

Zachary Kushubar - Choreographer
Zachary Kushubar was born and raised in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Zachary began his training in the ballet technique at the age of four years old at Ballet Spartanburg. After training at Ballet Spartanburg for 12 years, Zachary enrolled in the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, a residential high school specializing in the performing arts. He has participated in summer intensives including Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, University of South Carolina Summer Conservatory, and Boca Ballet Theatre’s Advanced Workshop. Zachary is now in his third year of undergraduate at Southern Methodist University, where he is pursuing a B.F.A in Dance Performance and a minor in Women and Gender Studies.
Karmen Moore - Choreographer
Karmen Moore is a dancer, choreographer, educator, and student earning her B.F.A. in Dance Performance at Southern Methodist University. Karmen has choreographed for Dance Dynamics Memphis and for SMU’s Student Choreography Showcase. She has trained with Dance Dynamics Memphis, Collage Dance Collective, and the Ailey School. Karmen’s work combines her African American cultural experience with her concert training to create a unique point of view.
Hannah S. Wolland - lighting designer
Hannah S. Wolland is a lighting/projection designer and stage manager currently based in Dallas. A New York native, she got her BFA in Theatre Design and Technology from the University at Buffalo. Hannah is currently pursuing her MFA in Stage Design at Southern Methodist University, in her second year. Hannah’s body of work spans a wide range of entertainment styles, including theatre, dance, opera, and site-specific installations.
In addition to her many academic design credits, including The Crucible and Hurt Village at SMU, Hannah’s work has been seen at The Naples Players in Florida and Perry-Mansfield School & Camp for the Arts in Colorado. She has been recognized by the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival for Outstanding Work in Stage Management. Her case study “Lumagination – Site Specific Design and Community Engagement”, co-authored with Professor Lynne Koscielniak, is included in the Routledge book Undergraduate Research in Theatre.
